In a way, the Swiss second seed hasn't really reached his peak at the Major yet, even though his tennis has looked mostly smooth with Berrettini thanking him for the "tennis lesson".

Down 3-1, Federer all but surrendered the set with half-hearted returns as Nadal levelled the semi up.

Let's pause to consider the stakes.

On Saturday, Serena faces Simona Halep for an eighth Wimbledon title and record-equalling 24th major. But with these two, as ever, we must consider legacies. Nadal saved two more break points at 4-1 but Federer held serve the rest of the way, clinching the set when the Spaniard netted a forehand.

"Coming out of the gates, we were both playing very well".

The Federer-Nadal semifinal was to follow shortly on Centre Court, and thousands of tennis fans jammed onto the large hill on the grounds of the All England Club to watch a reprise of the 2008 Wimbledon final on an oversize TV screen. "I hope we can back it up from there".

And a certain Rafael Nadal beat Roger Federer in what is considered by many to bethe greatest Grand Slam final of all time to win his first Wimbledon trophy.

A fifth match point arrived though and as Nadal swung a backhand over the baseline Federer pumped his arms above his head to celebrate only his fourth grand slam win over the Spaniard he has battled around the world for 15 years.

"The beginning of the third probably was one of the keys of the match".

But the second seed held his nerve - and serve - amid unbearable tension in the next game to complete a memorable victory with a forehand victor on his fifth match point after three hours and two minutes.

"Then I think at the end of the match I started to play much better, but it was late".

Djokovic leads 7-3 head-to-head, but Bautista Agut won their two matchups this season, both on hard courts.

But, despite being almost five years younger than his opponent, it was he who seemed to have lost the spring in his step and Federer took another step towards the finish line with a break for 2-1. You go through these kinds of emotional moments, especially in big matches like this, all the time.

Federer is closing it now. He has broken Nadal early in the fourth set. But Federer ensured the day's action ended with a bang, trading elite shots with his Spanish foe en route to a 7-6, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 triumph. It was settled in four sets, not five. "I'm just very relieved it's all over".

The 37-year-old, on the other hand, dropped the first set he played, to unheralded Lloyd Harris in the first round. Federer leads Nadal 2-1 in these matches.

"I am sad for the loss because for me it was another opportunity", said Nadal, who was also beaten in the semi-finals past year by Djokovic.

But Federer has more Grand Slam championships - 20 - and Wimbledon victories - eight - than anyone else in men's tennis.

Federer's victory means he will be competing in his 12th Wimbledon final on Sunday, where he will meet another of his longtime rivals, and the current defending Wimbledon champion, Novak Djokovic, who defeated Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut earlier in the day.
