Massive Power Outage Cripples Parts Of New York City

"We're getting reports of power outages in station complexes throughout Manhattan", the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said on Twitter.

However, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, tweeted to say that a manhole fire is responsible for the outage.

The local energy company Con Edison said about 42,000 people had been deprived of power.

As of 9 p.m. Saturday, Con Edison reported that more than 45,000 customers were without power in an area that included Midtown Manhattan and the Upper West Side. The New York Fire Department posted a message on Twitter saying it was at the scene of the blaze.

Authorities were scrambling to restore electricity to Manhattan following a power outage that knocked out Times Square's towering electronic screens and darkened marquees in the theater district and left businesses without electricity, elevators stuck and subway cars stalled.

Photos circulated on social media showing the iconic sign of Radio Music Hall unlit, movie-goers evacuating from Lincoln Center's cinema and the sprawling Columbus Circle subway station without lights.


"We are responding to extensive outages on the west side of Manhattan", said Con Ed spokesman Michael Clendenin told the New York Daily News.

The Daily Beast reports that the source of the outage is a blown transformer at West End Avenue and West 64th Street, but neither ConEd, NYPD or NYFD have confirmed what caused the break in service.

The electricity cuts come on the anniversary of a massive power failure in 1977 that plunged the NY skyline into darkness and triggered widespread looting and arson.

"Power out in all of Hell's Kitchen area and apparently east to Rockefeller Center".
